Our Ideas: Round 1

Today we met during office hours to bring together our ideas for how we are going to examine the JUA theme: Global Problems, Local Solutions.

Here's some of our questions:

Why does everyone in MA have to have health insurance?

What will happen to the free clinics if everyone has to have health insurance?
What's it like to be a doctor/go through med school?
"I'm really fascinated by the common cold, because there's no real cure for it."

We need some work on our questions...

so if you have any ideas, please post them below.

Here's some of the people/things we hope to meet/see

Go to the body worlds exhibit
Take a tour of harvard med school: what does it take to get in? speak to a med school student, speak to a professor
Interview a head ER doctor
Interview a hospital / health center administrator
Speak to an O.T. (two of the girls are in/have been in OT)
Something with the CDC
See a research lab
anything with sports medicine

Why are we doing this?

As the world faces overpopulation, global warming, starvation, disease, and poverty, our quality of life continues to decrease despite the creation of new technologies. While science attempts to use this human ingenuity to solve these world problems, in fact, it often adds to the destruction of the planet by destroying our resources, aiding global warming, wasting money and resulting in sickness and deaths. In the past, inventions such as the car, the assembly line, the freeze-dried fry, the antibiotic, and the gun have aided the world by increasing our mobility through transportation, creating cheaper goods and foods for more people, generating cures to major illnesses, and removing dictators will as few innocent deaths as possible. However, such inventions have also led to pollution, poor working conditions, unhealthy diets, antibiotic resistance, and the deaths of millions. By studying our past technological breakthroughs, our 2007 Junior Adventure Group hopes to determine whether inventions and discoveries increase the overall quality of life or hurt it and what actions that we as a group, school, community, country, and world must take to ensure that as many people can live by the highest standards possible. By answering this question, we can determine how to proceed with developing technologies such as renewable resources and new medicines to ensure that they only add to quality of life for all.

FINAL PRODUCT:
We plan to create a documentary-style video to explain the questions we are asking and our answers as well as our overall experience in Boston. We want to interview the experts, average citizens, as well as ourselves, the students, to explain what we know as a community, and to extrapolate, as a country and world. We hope that our video will express our plan to help the world as well convince others on their need to take action.
GRADE:
We are hoping to a Pass with Honors with a 5/5 Participation Score.
